What is it?
  • The Rotary Foundation (TRF) is the charitable and philanthropic arm of Rotary International, supporting Rotary members in doing humanitarian, educational, and peace-building work worldwide.
  • Founded in 1917 when outgoing Rotary President Arch C. Klumph proposed an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world”. Its mission: to enable Rotarians “to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.”
  • Since its founding, it has awarded billions of dollars in grants to clubs, districts and partner organisations for projects around the world.

Areas of focus

Projects and grants supported by the Foundation align with core thematic areas (often called “Areas of Focus” in Rotary).

  • These include (but are not limited to):
  • Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
  • Disease prevention and treatment
  • Water, sanitation and hygiene
  • Maternal and child health
  • Basic education and literacy
  • Community and economic development

These focus areas guide which kinds of projects TRF will support via its grant-programs.

Grant Programs: how they work

TRF offers several types of grants to support Rotary clubs, districts and partners.

Here are some of the key grant types:

District Grants

  • Short-term, small-scale activities (locally or internationally) consistent with TRF’s mission.
  • Generally easier to apply, quicker turnaround.

Global Grants

  • Larger scale international projects (or large scholarships/vocational training teams) with sustainable, measurable outcomes in one or more Focus Areas.
  • Requires more rigorous planning; minimum budgets apply.

Disaster Response Grants

  • Relief and recovery efforts for natural disasters.
  • Helps Rotary respond quickly in emergencies.

Programs of Scale

  • Relatively newer type of grant for large-scale, multi-year initiatives to expand proven program models across many people/places.
  • Allows Rotary to scale up what works.

Corporate Social Responsibility Grants Grants(in some regions)

  • Corporate Social Responsibility Grants for projects partnering with a for-profit corporation (e.g., in Australia/Brazil). Rotary Foundation Australia
  • Tailored to corporate funding plus Rotary clubs.

Why this matters

  • TRF enables Rotary clubs around the world to pool resources (money + manpower + expertise) and apply them strategically to humanitarian needs.
  • The grant structure helps ensure sustainability, measurable outcomes, and alignment with global priorities.
  • By offering both smaller-scale and large-scale funding options, TRF provides flexibility for clubs of varying size to participate.
  • The focus on program results (especially via Global Grants and Programs of Scale) means that the funds aren’t just “charity” but are investments in lasting change.

How a club might engage

  • A club can decide on a service project, ensure it aligns with one of TRF’s Areas of Focus.
  • If a smaller scale/local project: apply for a District Grant (through their district’s grant committee).
  • If a larger international project or scholarship: collaborate with partner clubs/districts, prepare a Global Grant proposal including sustainability plan, budget, metrics.
  • Monitor and report on the project as required by TRF (reporting is a key part of responsible grant management).
  • Engage members and community in fundraising (donations to TRF feeding the Annual Fund and Endowment Fund).
